It’s normal to feel low or down at some point in a persons life. Depression however is a totally different matter, as it is an illness, which affects the whole of a person, in other words the mood, thoughts and body. It influences everything from the way a person eats and sleeps to the way that they feel about themselves and think about things.

Understanding Depression Cause

Depression or depressive disorder is very different from a simple feeling of being low. It is not a sign that a person has a weak character or a condition that can simply be wished away. People with this disorder can’t just snap out of it and feel brighter. When someone has depressive disorder and they do not look for suitable treatment, their symptoms can last for weeks, months, or sometimes even years. Obtaining the appropriate treatment for depressive disorder can help most of the people who suffer from depression.

Depression symptoms can be different from individual to individual and can also depend on the severity of their depression. Depression will affect a persons thinking, behavior, feeling, and physical health.

How to Reduce Depression

1. Do not read newspapers.

Newspapers publish negative stories most of the time. Stories focused on War, rebellion, death, destruction, doom and despair abound in the newspapers.

Friends, family, and your local air raid siren will keep you informed if your attention is needed. Stop reading the newspaper and reduce the negative input to your brain.

2. Turn off your television.

Watching and listening about the horrible economy and the losses associated with War will add to depression. Helplessness allows depression to nurture. News television broadcasters are fighting for your guests’ attention as they promote despair, war, death, and destruction with many headline news interruptions. Television will diminish your positive spirit.

3. Say good things about others

Set yourself up to find the positive in anyone’s statement and you will keep negative thoughts and depression from overtaking your life.

Og Mandino, a great motivator once said, “treat everyone you meet as if they were going to be dead by midnight.” “Your life will never be the same again.”

4. Get physical exercise

Adults forget about exercise when suffering from depression. The result of exercise will improve your health as well as your attitude.

5. Breathe deep and relax.

Practice the following breathing exercise to relax your body and mind.

Breathe deeply and relax. For 2 or 3 minutes each hour, take a short mental vacation.

You can engage in this exercise while you are standing in the checkout line at the supermarket or when listening to others while talking on a telephone. You can complete the exercise at home or at work.

Take three deep breathes and relax. As you inhale, concentrate on calm and peaceful thoughts. You may think about relaxing by a mountain, by the ocean or comfortably in your favorite room at home.

As you exhale, concentrate on pushing any tension out of your lungs.

Focus on positive images in your life. Focus on laughter, love, excitement, and hope.

Keep breathing in and out in this pattern until you feel better. If you practice the exercise often, you will notice wonderful changes in your outlook and in other aspects of your life.

    “How to reduce depression” to me, I did not know that those are the things to reduce depression..

    During the worst period of my depression, I did not even have any desire to meet other people (except those in the office and most of the time I skipped working.. I did not have chance to say good things about others because I rarely talked with others.. it was torturing to be around people I know)
    I never watched TV because I did not have any TV (I refused to have one and lived without TV for almost 2 years), I never listened to the radio, never read any news. I hate physical exercise. I could not take deep breath, most of the time I had palpitation. No relax. Cannot understand why other can be relax. Anxiety was always there..

    If you really want to get rid of depression, I think that you should make an extra effort to try to relax. If your depression is mild (no suicidal thoughts) I’m certain that you can. Change the way you respond to daily problems by dealing with them with a positive attitude rather than a negative one. Always be thankful to God for all of HIs blessings in your life, your career, your children, your health, or any simple yet importat things, such as being able to breath, being able to see, or hear, and other small things. Deep breathing helps you relax. Read the simple relaxation techniques again, though in my experience, it needs practicing over and over again, eventually you will be able to do it anywhere anytime, and a good way to start is by doing relaxation techniques lying down in a place you feel comfortable in, such as in your cozy bed. And while you are relaxing, visualise wonderful places where you love being and makes you happy, also release the tension in all of your muscles in your body, starting from your head, face, neck, shoulders, arms and legs.
    If your depression persists, your depression may be serious and you need to consult your physician, he may give you some medication. Although a good way to treat depression is combining the medication and relaxation techniques. If you like, you might want to consider trying self help tools, as I have and it has helped me greatly. There is this great company which provides cds/cassette tapes with possitive affirmations with relaxing music in the background, why don’t you give it a try?
